We all realize that this world is the only one we have, and if we don’t take care of it, we’ll only have ourselves to blame for the results. Whether you’re motivated by a sense of personal responsibility, a desire to leave a better planet for your kids and grandkids, or simply want to establish a healthier footprint, these green ideas can certainly help you achieve your ecologically responsible goals as you plan your swimming pool design as well as the environment surrounding it.

How UV Pool Systems Help

An ultraviolet system can be used to lessen the environmental impact of your backyard swimming pool, while still keeping it safe for your use. UV pool systems greatly lessen the amount of chemicals needed, because they utilize UV rays to neutralize the kinds of microorganisms that resist chlorine or salt-generated sanitizers. A UV disinfection system can be implemented either at the time of your pool’s installation or added afterward, as long as you start with a saltwater pool. (We’ve looked at pro’s and con’s relating to saltwater pools in the past.) So if you haven’t decided on a pool type yet, if you at least start with a saltwater pool, you’ll be able to enhance it with a UV system later on.

A UV system will help improve overall water quality while simultaneously lowering chlorine levels, eliminating by-products of chlorine. (And that’s in addition to the lower chemical use of a saltwater pool in general.)

How Plants Help

While you can certainly incorporate a variety of aesthetic elements into your backyard oasis, they aren’t all created equal. When it comes to the ecosystem, the amount of green space truly makes a difference. When you plant even a small vegetable patch or add a flower pot, you’ll be impacting the ecosystem significantly, Your own health and that of those around you will benefit, thanks to the increased purity of the air. Since roots from trees and other plants also absorb water, erosion will be reduced. And greenhouse gases will be reduced overall, extending benefits beyond the borders of your property.

While the benefits of all plants – including ornamental ones – will provide positive rewards for the environment, vegetable gardens offer added bonuses. When you grow your own food rather than purchasing it at the grocery store, you’re further decreasing your carbon footprint. (If everyone did this, there would be far less in the way of transporting food to stores, etc.) With fewer trips to the store for fresh produce, you’ll stand to benefit more than the ecosystem – it will also stand to improve your own microcosm, by giving you more time and energy to enjoy the backyard swimming pool with the people you love most.
