Expanding Your Wardrobe: The Importance of Accessories

If you’re concerned about getting bored or looking bland with a minimalist or even a capsule wardrobe, then we have a word for you: accessories. When you invest in high-quality, designer pieces, the last thing you want to do is to purchase items that can only be worn one way or for a single season. By purchasing classic, high-quality basic pieces, though, you can provide an excellent backdrop on which to display seasonal, trendy, and even spectacular accessories. In fact, some women consider it a challenge to create a completely distinctive look using the same basic pieces but accessorizing them differently.

Capsule Wardrobe Basics

Okay, so you don’t have to be a capsule wardrobe proponent in order to benefit from the magical effects of accessorizing, but honestly? That’s where you’ll get the most bang for your buck. The most common hurdle to adopting a minimalist wardrobe is thinking that other people pay a lot of attention to what you wear. As one minimalist blogger puts it, “Most people are far too concerned with their own appearance to notice that you’ve been wearing the same trusty, fashionable and comfortable heels to work daily for six months.” The truth is, you don’t really have to wear a new item to every major event, and there are no rules about wearing the same outfit again in a single month or week.

You also need to get over the idea that you have to wear things you don’t like or don’t fit you well, simply because you spent “good money” on them. (In fact, the more you did spend on them, the greater the chance that you can resell or consign them and get some of your investment back out of them.)

Accessory Magic

Whether your main pieces are monochromatic and neutral (as many capsule wardrobes tend to be) or more creative (like this art-inspired selection), the key is to choose accessories that go with multiple clothing pieces and outfits and which can easily dress them up or down. While the above-mentioned minimalist is a college professor, this one is a work-at-home mom; your wardrobe should reflect your lifestyle.

But regardless of how professional or casual your wardrobe needs to be, choosing a simple, neutral color scheme will offer the greatest amount of versatility, giving you the most flexibility in choosing your accessories.

Whether you start with a wardrobe staple like the little black dress or something more casual like jeans and a plain black T-shirt, how you accessorize it will definitely be a game-changer.
