Home Security for Beginners: Getting Started with Your X10 System

Last updated on September 14, 2022 by Sozo Staff Leave a Comment

While X10.com is well known for its home-automation systems, this future-focused company also offers home security solutions.

X10 Security Option Overview

Like the X10 Home Automation components, X10 Home Security products can be purchased either individually or bundled, allowing you to create a custom system that makes sense with your unique security specifications. However simple or extensive of a security system you create, your X10 Security System will be able to be installed quickly and easily and typically without professional help.

If you purchase an X10 package deal, such as the X10 Intermediate Security 16-Piece System or the X10 Large 22-Piece Security Kit, you can be assured that it comes with everything you need – and with no required additional monthly fees.

X10 Security Layers

While you can build your own unique Security System, we recommend that any X10 Home Security System include 5 layers of home protection:
1. Security Signs and Decals
2. Timed Lighting
3. Perimeter Security Sensors
4. Motion Detectors
5. Voice Dialer

Of course, any already-bundled X10 Home Security Kit or System will usually include all 5 layers ready to go.

X10 Security Details

The first layer may contain the X10 Security Window Sticker, the X10 Security Yard Sign, or even multiple units of each. X10 cameras can be purchased separately and can be set up to search for larger thermal object motion in order to minimize false alarms by squirrels or other animals. X10 Timed Lighting typically comes in the form of the LM465 Lamp Module.

Perimeter Security Sensors extend past preventive security to alert you whenever your home’s perimeter has been breached. The DS12A Smart Door/Window Sensor can be attached to any window or door – even a cabinet door – and runs on 2 AAA batteries and soundlessly transmits signals to the DS1200 SecuriLINK Console; you can conveniently purchase a 4-pack of these devices.

Your X10 Security System will further protect your home in case of an intruder, thanks to the MS18A Smart Security Motion Detector. This wireless device takes 2 AA batteries and can sense motion within 30 to 40 feet; this pet-friendly device can also be deactivated when in Home Mode, preventing members of your household from accidentally triggering them. X10 Water Sensors and Glass Break Sensors can also be incorporated to provide additional monitoring of sensitive areas.

If your home’s perimeter or indoor area is compromised, your X10 Security System will trigger your Voice Dialer attached to the DS1200 SecuriLINK Console to call up to 5 pre-programmed numbers, until someone answers their phone. This last layer can also include an X10 Powerhorn Siren to blast the interior and/or exterior of your home.
