Fall and winter don’t have to be months spent indoors. There are plenty of creative ways to celebrate outdoors, including right around your backyard pool (see Parts 1 & 2). Now that you’ve taken care of coming up with the ideal lighting and decorations, it’s time to turn your attention to the activities as well as the menu.
1. Come Up With Energetic Games and Activities
Your water-loving guests who don’t mind braving the elements to get into the pool or hot tub likely won’t need to have organized activities to keep them entertained. But what about the guests who choose not to get wet? For guests who prefer not to get in the water, you’ll want to have some fun activities planned to help them stay warm and engaged in the party.
These activities can be planned around your theme, whether it be a fall harvest, Halloween, winter, Christmas, or another holiday party. You could play a game of Wax Museum, where one guest is the museum night watchmen. When his back is turned, the guests dance and move. When he turns around, the guests need to strike a pose. If he sees any of the exhibits in the museum (other guests) still moving, they’re out of the game. If you’re planning this game for a fall party, make it a haunted museum where the guests choose ghostly poses. If it’s for a Christmas party, they could pose as Christmas characters.
You could also try playing charades, which is always a party favorite any time of the year. Or, to mix things up a bit, try reverse charades. This is a variation of the original popular party game where only one person tries to guess what the other members of their team are acting out. You could base the charades the guests act out around your theme. For example, guests could have to act out being ghosts, goblins, mummies, or black cats for a Halloween pool party. For a Christmas pool party, they could act out being reindeer, elves, shepherds, or wise men.
Feel free to tailor your activities to the ages and interests of your guests. Just keep in mind that for an outdoor party being held in the cooler months of the year, it’s a good idea to plan some activities that will help keep everyone moving so they’ll stay warm.
2. Offer a Spread of Warm, Hearty Party Food
Now that everyone has worked up an appetite in the pool or with your other outdoor activities, they’ll be ready to dig into your delicious party cuisine. Warm, simple comfort foods are always a big hit at cool-weather pool parties. To make serving a cinch, consider keeping the food warm in outdoor crock pots. You can serve up favorites like barbecue meatballs, chili, or cream of broccoli and cheese soup. To add a festive fall or holiday feel, hot apple cider, hot cocoa, and s’mores around the fire would be a perfect finishing touch.
When it comes to planning the perfect outdoor fall or winter pool party, the key is to make sure you’re prepared to make your guests feel warm, well-fed, and entertained. These options we’ve shared can serve a springboard for your own creativity. The festive and fabulous possibilities are as limitless as your imagination!
