Spring, summer and fall are all perfect seasons for swimming pools, if you live in the hotter southern U.S. states. Regardless where you live, pool season never seems to be long enough, do you think? Its actual duration definitely changes depending on where exactly you live. However, if you convert your pool from an unheated pool to a heated pool, that can help extend your pool season regardless of your local environment. When it comes to efficiency in terms of performance, cost, and energy use, not all heating solutions are created equal. You should familiarize yourself with three pool heating solutions if you regularly dream of extending your pool season.
Solar Heaters
Solar heaters live up to their name: they rely on the sun’s heat and visibility to heat the water in your pool. They are the least priced and most environmentally friendly option. However, solar heaters don’t do much if the weather isn’t hot and sunny. There is definitely a drawback in using solar heaters, because those duller days are exactly when you might need a heated pool the most. However, solar heaters are fantastic entry-level solutions, because they produce no CO2 emissions and are relatively inexpensive. They can be utilized in addition to other heating systems to help cut back on energy costs.
Solar pool covers are one type of solar heater. These coverings provide easy installation and a heat-trapping insulated air layer that raises water temperature by up to 5 degrees. Although it might not seem like much, it can actually extend the season of your swimming pool by two whole months!
Gas Heaters
The most effective way to lengthen your swimming pool season is with a gas heater. They can offer the fastest heating solution, because they operate on combustion. The disadvantage is that gas heaters are also the most expensive. Some gas heaters use propane, while others use natural gas. They essentially heat the pool water while circulating it through both a filter and a heater. As the water flows through the pipes in the heater, the gas burns in the combustion chamber, heating the water.
Gas heaters are not all made equal. High-efficiency gas heaters are silent and environmentally friendly. Some include low-profile, streamlined designs with electronic ignitions that fit well with any landscaping.
Heat Pumps
Heat pumps are more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than gas heaters, and they operate almost as quickly. Heat pumps provide on-demand heat at a tenth of the cost of gas heaters without emitting damaging CO2. Heat pumps don’t truly produce heat, in contrast to gas heaters. Instead, they use electricity to trap heat.
As the water is circulated, it passes through the filter and heater of the heat pump. The outside air is then drawn in by the heater’s blower and allowed to travel over the evaporator coil. The liquid refrigerant in the coil then converts to a gas as a result of air heat absorption. The condenser subsequently transfers the heat from the gas to the water. The warmed up water is then returned to the pool, and the cooled-down gas passes through the compressor to be once again heated back up.
