J. Gibson McIlvain has over 200 years’ experience with hardwoods, dating back to the very beginnings of the United States. Our success stories date back to the very pillars of our nation, ranging from buildings of the Smithsonian Institute and even the White House.

By contrast, our experience with softwoods is fairly recent. For the past decade, though, we’ve applied our knowledge of lumber in general and learned much about this unique category of lumber. As a result, we’ve made changes in how we purchase and store softwood species. At the same time, though, we’ve continued our legacy of providing top-quality products for high-end applications. Our softwoods inventory includes only A-grade softwoods, including timbers and specialty softwoods products.

Specializing in Popular Softwoods Species

J. Gibson McIlvain chooses to focus on keeping an inventory of the highest grades of popular softwoods species, whether you need framing lumber or softwoods for millwork products, such as siding or paneling.

J. Gibson McIlvain keeps an inventory of the highest grades of popular softwoods species such as Clear Vertical Grain Western Red Cedar, Cypress, Northeastern White Pine, Douglas Fir, and Alaskan Yellow Cedar. We particularly make a point to carry large timbers in extensive lengths necessary for timber framing applications.

Specialty Softwoods Products

Our inventory also includes structural timbers from Alaskan Yellow Cedar, Clear Vertical Grain Western Cedar, and Douglas Fir trees. We’re also your source for specialty items such as bevel-edged siding and rustic face treatments. While we certainly specialize in a variety of high-end quality softwoods, we do not carry framing material or lumber that falls into the categories of “common” or “select.” Instead of trying to carry a wider variety of lumber, we choose to focus on the premium softwoods.

Special Order Softwoods

In addition to the popular species of which we have large quantities, we can also source other softwoods species in smaller amounts, if you require them for a particular project. Some of those less common softwoods species to which we have access includes Cyprus Eastern White Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Port Orford Cedar, Sitka Spruce, and Southern Yellow Pine. Even if we haven’t mentioned the species you desire, feel free to ask! Call us Monday through Friday at (800) 638-9100 to speak with a sales representative.

Special Treatment for Softwoods

As we’ve expanded our business to include softwoods, we’ve learned that this category of lumber deserves its own lumber yard area, in order to keep them in prime condition during the receiving, storing, and shipping processes. Our softwoods lumber yard area has allowed us to keep these boards, which come to us already surfaced on all 4, free from the risks of being marred or scratched by the dirt, dust, and gravel kicked up in the regular hardwood lumber yard area. We also carefully band and package our softwoods to protect these more impressionable boards during the loading and shipping processes.
