Have you ever wondered why a certain outfit can look terrible on you even when it looks great on the model in the magazine, a mannequin at the mall, or even your best friend or colleague? The issue isn’t with the outfit itself — or even the designer. How attractive an article of clothing comes across is often tied to the body type of the person wearing it. Whether or not you realize it, you’ve probably settled into a typical style of clothing that reflects a basic understanding of what looks good on you.
Now, we’ll help you get a little more precise about what works for you, so the next time you go shopping, you’ll know exactly what you’re after. There are many ways to describe body types, but we’re going to classify them according to four basic shapes: round, boxy, hourglass, and pear.
Clothing Options for Round Bodies
If you have some extra weight around your mid section right now or as a general rule (shoutout to you postpartum mamas!), you can mask that round shape by making sure your clothing fits snugly just about everywhere except that stomach you’d prefer to conceal. You’ll want to avoid belts or anything else that accentuates the waistline. Instead, choose empire-waist tops, shift dresses, and slim-fitting pants.
Clothing Options for Boxy Bodies
If instead of a round shape, your body could be described as boxy, the key is to create visual curves to make up for your body’s lack. Along those lines, you’ll want to avoid overall tight styles as well as unstructured clothing or pieces that de-emphasize your waistline. Ideal options include fitted jackets, feminine tops, and boot-cut pants.
Clothing Options for Hourglass Bodies
Women with hourglass figures have the opposite issue from those with boxy bodies: they want to make sure to work with their body’s natural curviness. With a smaller waist and more generous bust and hips, those with hourglass figures want to accentuate their waistlines. Instead of boxy styles like tunics or oversized cardigan sweaters, those with hourglass figures look great in V-neck tops, pencil skirts, and wrap dresses.
Clothing Options for Pear-Shaped Bodies
Those with pear-shaped bodies are larger on the bottom than they are on top. They do well to avoid oversized sweaters, skinny jeans, and the kinds of thin fabrics that hug curves. Pieces that can help mask a larger bottom half include wide-leg pants, boat-neck tops, and A-line skirts.
