Tips When Shopping for Your Body Size

In addition to shopping with your basic body type in mind, it can also be helpful to keep your size in mind — and by size, we mean both height and weight. Of course, you can’t make yourself taller or shorter, but you can create the illusion of less extreme dimensions by carefully selecting clothing styles, colors, and patterns.

Shopping for Your Height

Did you know that height plays a part in what looks good on you? Certainly, no outfit is going to make your 5’2” look as though you’re 6’ tall — or vice versa — but there are ways you can keep your clothing choices from making your height appear more extreme. One way is color: if you keep to a single hue from head to toe, you’ll essentially make yourself appear taller. On the flip side, if you’re already on the tall side, you want to use that concept in reverse, at least visually cutting your height in half by wearing a top that contrasts with your chosen bottoms.

What does that mean for tall women who like to wear dresses, you may be wondering? Make sure to go with a pattern rather than a solid, or at least break it up with a belt or contrasting scarf. Cuffs can add to the cutting-in-half effect, as well; for that reason, shorter women might want to avoid them.

If you’re on the taller side, you may also want to avoid vertical stripes or styles that reveal too much skin on your limbs. Short skirts will look even shorter, and spaghetti straps can look awkward, if you have especially long legs or arms.

Color, pattern, and style can combine to either make you look larger or smaller than you actually are. Just like taller women should avoid a monochromatic look, so should larger women. Wearing patterns can definitely break things up visually, making you look smaller than you are. Large, loud prints and tiny prints can also make you appear larger. Of course, most women know to avoid horizontal stripes if they don’t want to look wider than they are.

Darker colors can also help you appear smaller, while lighter and brighter ones can have the reverse effect. You can also visually break up your outfit by using belts and other accessories and layering various pieces. If you’re extremely slender, the reverse is true: wear solid colors and horizontal stripes with pride!
