As amazing as X10 Home Security Systems are, they’re even more impressive when you consider the possibility of combining them with X10 Home Automation products! Like X10 Home Security Systems, installing X10 Home Automation requires no specialty skills or professional installation. The intuitive design allows just about anyone to be able to achieve a “smarter” home!
X10 Home Automation Basics
X10 Home Automation offers a simple but exciting way to enhance your standard of living. While you can purchase Home Automation packages, you can also create your own custom kit — as long as you include the three basic components.
First, you need a controller; we have an assortment of wired and wireless controllers available. Second, you need a transceiver module. From the transceiver, a signal is sent through your home’s existing electrical wiring to the third component: an appliance module. The appliance module is, in turn, directly connected to a lamp or another appliance.
X10 Home Automation Choices: Controllers
As you build your X10 Home Automation System, one big decision you’ll want to make is what kind of controllers you’d like to use — starting with plug-in or wireless controllers. But you don’t have to choose just one!
Favorite wireless options include conveniently sized remotes like the KR19A Keychain Remote Control as well as the KR22A CreditCard Thin Remote Control, which can be programmed to control up to 4 X10 addresses. The SS13A Slimline Switch Decorator White also allows you to wirelessly control up to 4 addresses. The HR12A PalmPad Remote Control allows you to control an impressive 16 X10 addresses with this single remote!
Plug-in controllers include the MT14A 64-Event LCD Mini Timer (formerly the MT13A) and the MC10A White Plug-in Mini Controller.
And there’s a third option, too! Instead of manually turning on a light, you can use motion to trigger it! Either as a tie-in with X10 Home Security Systems or simply as an aspect of an X10 Home Automation System, Motion Sensors can be used to automatically turn on a light — or any other appliance — whenever you enter a certain room or area of your home.
X10 Home Automation Choices: Lights and Appliances
In addition to controllers, you’ll need to decide, well, what kinds of things you want to control! After that, you can figure out how many Appliance Modules (like the AM486 Appliance Module 2-Pin Polarized) and Lamp modules (like the LM465 Lamp Module) you’ll need. Essentially, the difference between an appliance module and a lamp module is that a lamp module includes dimming capabilities — even if your lamp didn’t have any built in!
If you don’t want to have to make too many decisions — and you like saving money — you can get started with one of our X10 Home Automation bundles, instead.
